Getting Help Through Oprah Show
It was the beginning of the new millennium, and all I could think about was getting a fresh start for the year ahead. I was in an unhealthy relationship at the time that lasted nearly 4 long years and all I could think about was how bad I wanted to free myself. I was lost in a world of depression and had no self-esteem.
One day, while sitting at my desk on the computer, I decided to stroll through the Oprah Winfrey website when I came across “Be a Guest”. I clicked to see a full listing of upcoming shows where they were looking for guests. Under one listing, I saw “Oprah's 2000 Time Capsule IX”. This was a show about people making positive changes with their life for the new millennium.
As I read through the synopsis, I realized how much I had fit into what they were looking for and how much this would help me get out of my situation – or at least I hoped. So, I decided to take a chance and write the show.
Two weeks later, my phone rings, it’s a man named Jim Brady telling me he is one of the producers at the Oprah Show. Initially, I didn’t believe it, but after he told me about the letter I written, I knew this was for real.
Many people ask me all the time how do you get on the Oprah Show. There are four types of people who want to get on her show. Type 1: These are the ones who have general problems and are hoping that maybe Oprah would have the solution. Type 2: They are the ones who only want tickets to the show and be in the audience. (I will supply that information later). Type 3: These are the ones who have their own businesses and are looking for television publicity to promote their products or services. Type 4: These are the ones who just want to be on television for the hell of it – or, just to see/meet Oprah. I’ll talk about that more later.
The advice that you find here will be for all four types. There is no set rule to being on Oprah, but I’ve found with some helpful advice, you may have a chance after all. So, in saying all of that, here we go:
Type 1: For People Who Have General Problems and Are Seeking Help Via The Oprah Winfrey Show:
ADVICE #1: Know What Your Purpose Is For Writing the Show
If you ever write to Oprah, know exactly why you are writing. If the show is looking for women who want a make-over, you don’t want to write about anything that is not related to that subject matter. Stay focused on what the topic is all about and what the show is looking for. Go through the Oprah website at www.oprah.com and click on “Be a Guest”.
ADVICE #2: Keep Your Letter One-Page
There is nothing more annoying than reading a long winded letter. Producers don’t have time for that and will often bypass it if your letter is too long. When I wrote to the Oprah Show, I kept my letter 1-page. Your first paragraph should immediately tell why you are writing the show. Have an attention grabber! See example below:
UPCOMING OPRAH SHOW TOPIC:
Oprah's 2000 Time Capsule IX – Do You Want to Make a Positive Change Before 2000?
EXAMPLE 1ST PARAGRAPH IN A LETTER TO OPRAH:
Dear, Oprah,
I am a 31 year old woman and have been in an unhealthy relationship for over 4 years. In the 4 years I have known him, he has never introduced me to his parents – or has taken me on a date. I am desperate to get out of this relationship before the New Year.”
Your first paragraph should always say something to snag the producers attention. I used what I knew would get their immediate attention by saying, “In the 4 years I have known him, he has never introduced me to his parents – or has taken me on a date.” I knew by saying that, although it was the truth that the producers would want to question me further and ask, “In the four years that she was dating a man who never took her out on a date, or introduced her to his parents, why would she stay with him?” And I was right – 100%! Always keep your letter interesting and to the point!
The second paragraph should basically follow up on the first paragraph – but should be more detailed. Tell a little more about your experiences.
The last paragraph should be a closing one. Basically, tell what you are looking for and how it can benefit you. Do not tell why you should be on the show. You do not want to sound like you are trying to sell them something or that you are desperate just because you want to be on the Oprah Winfrey show. The producers can tell who is real and who is not: bottom line.
Here is an example of a closing paragraph:
Your upcoming show on “Oprah's 2000 Time Capsule IX” can help benefit me in so many ways or someone who may be going through the same things. Hopefully my story can have a positive impact on your viewers.
Thank you so much for your time.
Warmest Regards,
SJ
ADVICE #3: Don’t Tell Too Much Information
It is not necessary to “talk too much” in your letter. Your letter should be about 3 to 4 paragraphs at the most. Do not go into heavy detail about your story – only give them enough to become interested as I have written above in my examples. Give them something to make them want to call you.
ADVICE #4: Include All Contact Information in Your Letter
Be sure to include your phone number, email address when writing to the Oprah Show. Although they have a category in the email form online to fill in this information, I would strongly suggest adding it to your letter in the event of any technical glitches.
ADVICE #5: Wait About 3 Weeks Before Resending Your Letter if You Do Not Hear From Anyone
It only took two weeks for the producers to call me from the Oprah Show after I emailed my letter. However, because of the heavy volume of letters the show receives, it would be in your interest to be as patient as possible to see if you get a response. Wait at least three to four weeks. After that, try sending it again. If you still do not get a response, try rewriting your letter (but only send it once more). If you do not hear from the Oprah Show after trying three times, do not resend. They are not interested.
Type 2: For People Who Just Want Tickets to the Show
It is not all that easy to get tickets to the Oprah Winfrey show. However, with persistence and determination, you can get those tickets you are looking for!
Seat reservations for The Oprah Winfrey Show are available almost exclusively by phone. Because there is such a great demand for tickets, you will more than likely get a busy signal before getting through to one of their Audience Department members. Periodically, you may be able to request last minute reservations by e-mail. And even after speaking with someone from the show, tickets are not guaranteed. Periodically, you may be able to request last minute reservations by e-mail. Before you can send email, you must be a registered member of the Oprah Winfrey site. Here is the link to sign up:
